The River of Hidden Sexual Eenergy
By Hans Meijer
A river is not some amount of water, that just happens to be there.
Rivers flow from a specific point to another specific point along a
course, the river has planned and shaped for itself, over the course
of many centuries. Water tends to follow the forces of gravity and cut
a path for itself, that enables it to do so in the easiest way. In
tems of (sexual) energy we want you to help the river of this energy
flow as smoothly as it can in order to make the most of it and
optimize its possibilities and use.

The easiest way to understand this energy flow is to see yourself as
one of many tiny connectors between the planet (below you) and the
universe (above you). This connector allows energy to flow back and
forth, it can function as a switch and it can use the energy, passing
through, for itself in the same way people, plants and animals use the
river as it passes through for many different purposes. Energy
(regardless the shape it takes) that flows between the planet and the
universe can be just as calm and gentle as the water in the river (the
sunlight can warm you, a gentle summer breeze can cool you, the
magnetic field makes sure you don't fall off the planet as it turns in
space). But it can also be as forceful as a river can be (lighting,
infrared radiation, storms and gravity that will not only make you
stick to the planet but may also make you fall and break bones if you
are not careful).

In terms of your body this river passes through from the top of your
head, along the center and spine, splits into two channels and then
continues through your legs. The top of your head and the soles of
your feet are both entry and exit points. Two other main energy flows
follow this same route: the backbone of your hormonal system and the
information flow between the body and the brain. When we talk about
"sexual energy" we talk about the combination of the sexually related
elements of these three three energy rivers: Ki energy, hormonal
energy and nervous sytem energy. You may also call these "information
flows" or "data streams", since energy and information are always
combined.

Physical and mental work out will help you to smoothen the path, the
river takes, will clear narrow spots and even out waterfalls. As a
result, the energy distribution will be optimzed and energy will be
distributed in larger quantities and more evenly and effieciently. And
you will benefit from all that.

Energy: the basis of Shibari

The objective of Shibari (Japanese bondage0 is to actively work with
this sexual energy. To optimize it, use as much of it as you can (yes
you are allowed to be greedy and selfish) and influence it purposely.
One translation of the word Shibari is "weaving" and this refers to
weaving the energy channels and the ropes to an intricate, well
designed pattern in order to achieve certain goals.

Since a wide variety of other "internal enegry or information systems"
follow the same routes, a spin off of learning to use and influence
sexual energy flows is that this will also improve your general
physical and mental wellbeing. While this is not an objective, it is a
fringe benefit. This is also the reason why it is important to
understand what you are doing. Accidentally sending the wrong signal
to other energy/information streams may have an undesired effect on
your wellbeing and that of course is not what we are after.

The pivotal point of these energy highways is what is called Hara in
Japanese. This is your physical gravity point. It is located inside
your body, three fingers below your belly button (guess why that is
exactly the spot where a woman carries her babies). That is where the
channel splits into the two channels that follow your legs. This is
not a random distribution of energy. No, certain energies deliberately
take a left turn, others take the right exit. So it is not only a
split, it is also a switchboard. And since this is also your main
point of gravitational sense, the main focus of everything is there.
Also, that point is located in the exact middle of your two kidneys
and the kidney meridian plays an important role in your sexual
activity. Again, that is no wonder. Everything else the kidneys do has
a direct connection with a certain exit point in your body (one of its
main waste disposal channels) that also happens to be the main exit
and entry area for your sexual and concepttional abilities. As you can
see, almost everything in your body is a multi purpose tool.

Hara is the pivotal point. It is what divides the upper half from your
body from the lower half. The ancient Celts used to refer to it as
"the shield". Hence all excersizes - aimed to improve the flow of
sexual energy - work as a double bladed knife, training both the upper
half and the lower half of your body, with Hara being the center
point. In case you'd like to see this in terms of Yin and Yang, the
upper half of the body is Yang, the lower half Yin and Hara is the
birthpoint of either Yin of Yang, depending on where you stand (the
Yin and Yang philosophy will be explained at a later stage).

Moving energy around

Moving energy aorund in your body is not some fluffy New Age term. It
is what your body does the whole time and in many different ways and
quantities. It is just a different, maybe more conceptual or
philosophical approach. When - for example - you accidentally step on
a nail your body instantly sends a wide variety of different energy
flows to your brain and back. You experience that as pain, warning,
stress and muscle reflexes. When you walk around you are basically
throwing gravitational energy into the direction you are going. A
martial arrtist will simply use his opponent's energy and send it into
the direction he wants it to go - the opponents' body will simply
follow the direction of that energy. There are thousands of other
examples.

You will find many different references to such energies in many
different cultures and techniques, such as in yoga (where it is called
"kundalini") in T'ai Chi or Qi Gong for example. it does not really
matter what you call it, or which technique you prefer, since the
basis is always the same, it is just that the emphasys may be
different. In the course of our explanation of Shibari, we will
sometimes make cross overs to other techniques and cultures. In all
honesty, since we are trying to teach an ancient Japanese art to a
modern (western or oriental) audience, it is actually helpful to try
and not be a purist, simply because that would be counterproductive.

So, since you already know you move around energies all the time, the
first important thing to do is to realize THAT you do this, to
identify them and to try and start to do this conciously. For example,
try to walk and conciously feel what gravity is doing to you and what
you are doing to gravity.

Killing two birds with one stone

Shibari encompasses some complex and physically demanding techniques.
If you plan to incorporate these in your lovemaking, it is a very good
idea if the recipient especially spends time preparing and training
for this, which is also what these exercizes will help you do. The
most important thing here is to train your sense of balance and
gravity and gain flexibilty, not muscle power. Finally, all exersizes
will help you to wake up your Ki meridians and again improve your
sexual experience.

Excersizes, designed for the recipient are also benificial to the
giver on a general level.
